Impact windows vs. shutters: the honest comparison
When impact glass is worth the premium, when shutters are the smarter buy, and where the answer depends on your house.
Up-front cost
Shutters win by a wide margin. A whole-home accordion package can cost a third of equivalent impact windows. If the budget conversation ends here, shutters are the answer.
Long-term value
Impact windows usually win over a 15–20 year horizon. They reduce noise, block UV (which fades floors and furniture), trim cooling bills, and often earn larger insurance credits. They also add to resale value in a way shutters generally don't.
Lifestyle
If you travel for hurricane season — common in Palm Beach and Naples — impact windows or smart roll-downs are the only "already deployed" options. Accordion shutters and storm panels still require a human at the house.
Aesthetics
Impact windows look like ordinary windows. Shutters, even well-installed, are visible. In historic districts and high-end neighborhoods, this matters and sometimes drives the decision more than cost or performance.
Verdict
If you're staying 7+ years and can stretch the budget, impact windows. If you're cash-constrained or planning a sale within a few years, accordion shutters on living areas plus storm panels on utility openings is the practical Florida default.
